Hikaru No Go Live Action Drama (Soul of Chess)

OMG it’s an adaptation of Hikaru No Go!!! Which was a very good manga about pursuing your dreams and overcoming adversity. The actual name of this drama is Soul of Chess though.

Honestly, when I saw this at first glance, I had very LOW expectations. But then seeing AvenueX’s first impression on it, I looked up the trailer.

And it doesn’t look that bad.

The manga came out in 1998 and it was a very good read but even if you don’t know the manga I think this drama is good to watch nonetheless.

Synopsis

The play tells the story of Xiao Guang who discovered an ancient Go board by coincidence. Thus getting to know Chu Ying, a Go player who has been entrenched in the Go board as a “soul”.

Under Chu Ying’s influence, Xiao Guang discovers how interesting Go is and aspires to become a professional Go player.

While encountering various friends and rivals along the way.

I like how the character names correspond to the characters from the manga. The names are not an exact translation but the original meaning is kept. Which is what you would expect from an adaptation.

For example.

Hikaru Shindo is the main character from Hikaru No Go and his name means light.

While in this adaptation, the main character has the equivalent Chinese word.

So I’m intrigued to give this adaptation a shot. If you’re still on the fence, check out the trailer below! Maybe you’ll change your mind?

What do you guys think? Have you read the manga before? If you have, will you give this adaptation a shot?

By the way, I watched about 10 episodes on HNG, until the one where they get lost on the mountain during the Go Camp. Pretty good show! One of the more subtle C Dramas I’ve seen. But I didn’t like having to use Viki to watch it 🙂
